Mexico's annual headline inflation came in at 3.94 percent in May, marking the first return to Banco de México's variability range since January. The reading ends four months of pressure above the four-percent ceiling and opens a wider monetary policy window for the months ahead.
The INEGI figure represents a half-point drop from April's 4.45 percent. According to [El Financiero](https://www.elfinanciero.com.mx/economia/2026/06/10/inflacion-se-modera-a-394-y-vuelve-al-rango-de-banxico/), the moderation was concentrated in the non-core component, which fell from 5.08 to 3.10 percent on lower prices for fruits, vegetables, and energy. For Mexico, the reading goes beyond the monthly headline. The trajectory reshapes the timeline the market had been pricing for additional central bank moves, with the benchmark rate currently at 6.50 percent following the May 7 cut. Banxico's target band sits between two and four percent, with a midpoint of three.
[Excélsior](https://www.excelsior.com.mx/nacional/inflacion-mexico-modera-mas-previsto-mayo-ubica-3-94) notes that core inflation, which Banco de México monitors more closely given its lower volatility, fell to 4.19 percent year-on-year, still above the three-percent point target. The analyst consensus expects the benchmark rate to hold at 6.50 percent through both year-end 2026 and 2027, with no additional cuts in the near term. May's decline exceeded market participants' expectations and marked the second consecutive monthly drop, following 4.45 percent in April and 4.63 percent in March.
The next INEGI inflation reading, covering the first half of June, and the Banco de México governing board decision on June 26 will set the course for the second half of the year. An additional upside surprise in core services could reopen the debate on further rate cuts toward year-end.
